...Ensemble-Arbeit mit einem großen Anteil Wiener Idiom – was nicht zuletzt auch das Verdienst des Dirigenten Friedrich Haider ist. Man spürt, dass er mit Strauß und seiner Aufführungstradition seit Jahren vertraut ist; und für meine Begriffe kommt er mit Chor und Orchester der Ungarischen Staatsoper dem Stück viel näher als mancher Pult-Star, der sich nebenbei mal eine „Fledermaus“ in Wien gönnt.

Friedrich Haider’s lively conducting is undoubtedly a unifying force. His tempos can be bracing (...) but he understands the music’s rhythmic lift. Eschewing the traditional holds and Luftpausen, he evokes the Viennese rubato spirit with flexible phrasing and catches the rhythmic bounce in the coda of the Falke duet and the opening of the Act III finale. (...) the playing is full of character and color – the strings dig vigorously into Eisenstein’s entrance, for example, while the woodwind interplay in the overture is sensitive.

Friedrich Haider’s conducting is light and stylish, with just enough swing in the big tunes and dramatic punch in the ensembles to keep the listener enthralled. Haider’s tasteful use of rubato, his flair for picking tempos that allow the singers to projectthe sometimes tricky text and negotiate the awkward intervals, and his Harnoncourt-like ability to keep instrumental timbres differentiated all bear witness to a real appreciation for the music and an uncommon ability to make it sound greater than the sum of its parts.
